জল সংকট
ক্ষয়প্রাপ্ত মাটি জল প্রবাহকে শোষণ এবং নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে পারে না।
জল ধারণ ক্ষমতার অভাবের জন্য জলের অভাব, ক্ষরা এবং বন্যা ঘটে।
জৈব পদার্থ তার নিজের ওজনের প্রায় ৯০% জল ধরে রাখতে পারে আর সময়ের সাথে সাথে ধীরে ধীরে তা নিঃসৃত করে। খরা প্রবণ এলাকাতে এটি এক বিরাট সহায়তা।

মাটিতে সঞ্চিত কার্বনের পরিমাণ জীবিত গাছপালাতে সঞ্চিত কার্বনের ৩ গুণ, এবং বায়ুমণ্ডলে সঞ্চিত কার্বনের ২ গুণ, অর্থাৎ কার্বনের পৃথকীকরণের জন্য মাটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
যদি পৃথিবীর মাটিকে পুনরুজ্জীবিত না করা হয় তবে তা পরিমণ্ডলে ৮৫০ বিলিয়ন টন কার্বন-ডাই-অক্সাইড নিঃসরণ করতে পারে যার পরিমান সমগ্র মানবজাতির গত ৩০ বছরের মোট নিঃসরণের চাইতেও বেশি এবং যা জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনে অনুঘটকের কাজ করবে।

মাটি ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়ে যাওয়ার কারণে হাজার হাজার কৃষকেরা আত্মহত্যা করছেন।
ভূমিক্ষয় সারা বিশ্বে দরিদ্র জনসংখ্যার ৭৪% কে সরাসরি ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত করছে।
অনুমান করা হচ্ছে যে মাটির বিলুপ্তির কারণে বিশ্বকে প্রতি বছর ১০.৬ ট্রিলিয়ন ডলার মূল্য ব্যয় করতে হয়।
